In the 70's the then 'Ark Royal' was to be scrapped, the USA were un-happy about this as it left a huge whole in NATO defence, the then 'Ark Royal' punched well above it's weight and the USA and the rest of the world knew this.
As 'The Ark'... was about to be scrapped, the Guatemalans decided they would take the Belize by force, 'The Ark' although many thousands of miles away managed to steam at full pelt towards Belize, when close enough to launch aircraft she put two Buccaneers on a long range mission over Belize city as a show of force, two modern jets was enough to convince the Guatemalans with their ageing World war II Mustangs that invasion was a bad idea, with out 'Ark Royal' Britain would have been unable to defend Belize and the country would have fallen against the wishes of it's citizens.
Fast forward about ten years and the same situation happens again with Argentina invading the Falklands, again, a Royal Navy aircraft was able to put aircraft over the war zone and defend the airspace, history tells us that with controlling the air, you can't win a war, think back to the Battle of Britain, Germany was unable to control British airspace so the invasion of Britain was abandoned.
Fast forward to the present day and we have a government that is quickly proving it self to be incompetent, ignoring the advice of military commanders who along with history can argue that an aircraft carrier with aircraft flying off it's decks is vital to the protection of British and common wealth interests.
